Still a standard reference on the history of American cartography. Seven chapters by Schwartz review the evolution of North American cartographic representation through 1800, from the mapping of America as a new continent in 1500 and the developments of Atlantic and Gulf Coast exploration, discovery of inland waterways, colonization and interior expansion, and the emergence of the United States as a nation. In the book's last three chapters Ehrenberg reviews the cartographic imagery of the U.S. as the country grew from 1800 to 1840, the development of scientific and thematic maps from 1840 to 1900, and the mapping of the industrialized United States from 1900.
