Octavo. Original black pebbled cloth. Gilt title to front cover. 32 pages plus folding lithograph map. Remarkably clean and nice. San Francisco Waterfront in 1891 by Britton & ReyA large, detailed map of the San Francisco waterfront from Center Street to Van Ness Ave. The lithographed plan, Map of the Water Front of San Francisco from Center St. to Van Ness Ave., revised in January 1891, captures the eastern shoreline just as the harbor was being modernized, with the Board of State Harbor Commissioners extending the Embarcadero Seawall and rationalizing piers and reclaimed seawall-lot blocks; Britton & Rey printed it from a drawing by draughtsman Carl Uhlig. The timing coincides with the launch of the State Belt Railroad, which began operating along the waterfront in 1890 to connect the new finger piers with regional rail lines, a key step in turning the Embarcadero into a high-throughput port.Uhlig worked for 42 years building and reconstructing the San Francisco waterfront, serving the Harbor Commission as an interim assistant state engineer, working on structural innovations such as concrete-jacketed piles. When he died in 1919 the Chief Engineer of the time, F.G. White, declared "Uhlig is as necessary to the Harbor Board as the Ferry Building and more dependable than the big clock."The accompanying report of the Board of State Harbor Commissioners describes work on the seawall, as well as on the Belt Railroad.RarityQuite rare, especially in such nice condition. Only one example in RBH (of the map without text). This is first example we have handled.…
