[AND WITH:] SMITH, Edgar Crosby. Moses Greenleaf. Maine's First Mapmaker. Bangor, Maine: Printed for the De Burians, 1902. 4to (8 x 6 1/4 in.; 20.3 x 15.9 cm). LIMITED EDITION, no. 63 of 201 copies. Title in red and black, 9 illustrations including folding facsimile of manuscript map of 1815. Original blue holland boards, brown cloth spine, printed paper spine label. PROVENANCE: Francis B. Greene, historian and author of The History of Boothbay, Southport, and Boothbay Harbor, Maine (stamp on front free endpaper, illustrated label loosely laid in, shelf ticket on rear pastedown). THE RARE FIRST EDITION, FIRST STATE of Greenleaf's monumental 1829 wall map, issued separately but in conjunction with his two other ambitious publications of that year: "Survey of the State of Maine, in Reference to its Geographical Features, Statistics and Political Economy" and "Atlas Accompanying Greenleaf's Map and Statistical Survey of Maine." Granted statehood in 1820, by 1829 Maine was still embroiled in a dispute with Great Britain over its northern boundary. This map is the first to show the boundary from actual surveys. The claims were settled by the Webster-Ashburton Treaty of 1842, in which the United States ceded 5,000 square miles of disputed territory along the Maine border, including the Halifax-Quebec Route, but kept 7,000 square miles of the disputed wilderness. The map is also notable for the accuracy in which it presented hundreds of lakes and rivers in the interior. PROVENANCE: Doyle's, 17 April 2019, lot 52.
