Description:
Size: leaf: 365mm x 487mm, printed area: 308mm x 428mm. Lorenz Fries was a physician, astrologer and cartographic editor. This map is from the second edition of Fries' Ptolomy - the maps being originally constructed by Matrin Waldseemüller. In the North are the Mountain of the Moon, in which it was believed the Nile found its source. Additionally depicted are 3 rulers on their thrones, serpents, a dragon, an elephant and an anthill along with other mountains and rivers. The king of Portugal is depicted riding a dolphin in the lower right hand corner. This map has been professionally restored; it has been removed from acidic backing board onto which it was laid down, cleaned and lined with very fine Japanese tissue. Very minor insect damage to the center fold and a few spots of foxing in the Atlantic Ocean. Very good overall. Karrow, 28/41. Seller Inventory # 29679
