Navigating this vast topic, the author unveils an array of projections, from the simple to the mathematically elegant. By studying their strengths and weaknesses, the reader gains a newfound appreciation for the challenges of cartography. This comprehensive guide not only clarifies the theory of map projections but also explains how they can be constructed and even used to solve practical geographical problems. With expert insights, the author reveals how recognizing the distortions inherent in any projection is critical to using maps effectively. Ultimately, this book empowers the reader to critically assess the diverse array of maps they encounter daily and gain a deeper understanding of our planet's geography. Maps That Tell The Truth: how projections shape scale, area, and form—and how to choose the right one for your map.
This non‑fiction guide explains how map projections influence what you see. It presents the main ideas a reader should know to compare projections, test their merits, and use them effectively in real maps.
The book outlines clear criteria for judging projections: how well they preserve scale along meridians and parallels, how accurately they represent areas, how faithfully they show shape, and how easy they are to construct. It also discusses the practical side of choosing a projection for a map, and how different projections can lead to different interpretations of the same territory. What you’ll experience
- A framework for evaluating map projections based on scale, area, and shape
- Explanations of common projections and their practical uses
- Guidance on recognizing what a projection will or won’t do on a map
- Ways to understand the relationships between projections and real-world maps

Product Description
The scale of a map in a given direction at any point is the ratio which a short distance measured on the map bears to the corresponding distance upon the surface Of the Earth.
We must limit our definition to Mort distances because the scale of a map will generally vary from point to point; hence in defining scale we must confine ourselves to small elements of distance in the way which is familiar to every beginner in the differential calculus.
