Print on Demand. This book presents the system of 'Object Teaching' — an approach to learning that aligns with how young children naturally acquire knowledge through their senses. The author claims that current methods of instruction are often out of step with how the mind develops and how knowledge is gained in the real world. This text advocates for a return to 'Nature's system' of teaching, whereby children are presented with concrete objects and experiences, and then use those to grasp abstract words and concepts. The book's insights draw from various academic disciplines and historical sources. It illustrates diverse subject areas, including language, geography, and natural history. Ultimately, this book suggests that by aligning teaching methods with how the mind naturally learns, educators can unlock children's potential for comprehensive and lasting knowledge acquisition. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Nor is it the mere acquisition of knowledge that has been thus early accomplished. The perceptive faculties have had that kind of training which has peculiarly con tributed to give them accuracy and vigor: the attention has been cultivated by presenting to it objects of interest and of suitable variety: memory has been pleasurably, and hence profitably exercised: reason and judgment have had presented to them the materials for their early cultivation; and the germs of the moral nature have been developed in the early emotions of infantile. Joy and sorrow, followed by feelings of sympathy, and the first notions of right and duty.
We believe there are some very important principles in this system of Nature's teaching, that should be consider ed and adopted in arranging a system of school instruction. We purpose to point out a few of these principles, hoping, by showing how far we have departed from them, to indi cate a system more in accordance with that of Nature.
