Mantids are charismatic predators with a significant diversity in tropical rainforests. In French Guiana, 78 species are currently recorded, each more extravagant than the other. Paradoxically, their biology and ecology are very poorly understood, and it is currently impossible to compile a complete inventory of the species present in South America. To fill this gap, the author spent ten years collecting all available information to create a reliable and up-to-date database. Significant taxonomic and systematic revision was carried out to produce an accurate list of the species present in French Guiana. Finally, close collaboration with a network of local entomologists has enabled the collection of important information for our understanding of this group of insects (distribution, phenology, etc.). After an introductory section devoted to the biology of mantids, their habitat, and observation and collection methods, the author provides identification keys (in French and English) and comprehensive descriptive sheets for each species (accompanied by photos of habitus, both in collections and in natura, as well as photos of morphological details and male genitalia, allowing for identification). In a final section, the author provides an overview of this synthesis, highlighting certain gaps in the sampling and opening up avenues for future surveys and research. This illustrated fauna of the different species present in French Guiana is intended to facilitate species identification and generate field studies. It is intended for naturalists, professional and amateur entomologists, managers of natural areas, and more generally for all stakeholders involved in the protection and conservation of French Guiana's natural heritage. Paris. Muséum national d'Histoire naturelle. 328 pp., num. color photos of field sites, living mantids, mounted specimens & genitalia, 42 color figs & distribution maps, flexibound gr. 8 [16.5 x 24 cm] [in French].
