Topic Tackler CD-Rom is a new CD free with every new copy of the text. Topic Tackler is unique because it integrates video clips, PowerPoint slides, interactive exercises, and a self-test for the two most difficult and/or important topics in each chapter into an integrated and guided study session. Students and instructors will appreciate this because, it is text-specific and reinforces the core concepts in the text. Icons in the margins of the text highlight the concepts covered in Topic Tackler. The navigation is incredibly simple and no installation is necessary. This means that students are able to get extra help with little effort needed by the professors.
Expanded coverage of service industry examples (this includes retail and non-profit) for a more balanced approach. These are now marked with a new 'S' icon in the text.
Chapter Eight on 'Activity-Based Costing' has been completely re-written and reorganized for better flow and easier comprehension, but still stresses decision-making. The more complex portions have been put into an appendix, where it may be included at the instructor's discretion.
The 'Income Taxes in Capital Budgeting Decisions' (was Chapter 15 in 9/e) has been reduced and moved into a shorter appendix- no longer a full chapter.
'In-Business' boxes, which offer glimpses into how real companies use managerial accounting concepts, have been thoroughly updated with several new examples. These demonstrate to students that what they are studying is relevant in the business world regardless of their major. Examples of international business practices are prevalent.
Author-Written Supplements- Unlike other managerial accounting texts, Garrison and Noreen write all of the text's supplements, insuring a perfect fit between text and supplement. For more information on Managerial Accounting's supplements package, see below.
Managerial Accounting in Action- These highly-praised vignettes depict cross-functional teams (employees from marketing, management, accounting, production, etc.) working together in real-life settings, working with the products and services that students recognize from their own lives. Students are shown step-by-step how accounting concepts are implemented into organizations and how these concepts are applied to solve everyday business problems. First, 'The Issue' or problem is introduced through a realistic dialogue; the student then walks-through the implementation process; and then 'The Wrap-Up' summarizes the big picture. Each vignette is between 3- 6 pages in length and contain numerical exhibits to promote understanding.
Praised End of Chapter Material- Managerial Accounting has earned a reputation for the best end-of-chapter review and discussion material of any text on the market. The problem and case material continues to conform to AECC and AACSB recommendations and makes a great starting point for class discussions and group projects. Other helpful features include: Writing assignments that encourage students to practice critical thinking. Ethics assignments serve as a reminder that good conduct is just as important as profits in business. Group projects can be assigned either as homework or as in-class discussion projects. Internet assignments teach students how to find information online and apply it to managerial accounting situations. Real-world data is used whenever possible to underscore the importance of managerial accounting in actual business practice.
Spreadsheet Integration- Spreadsheets have become an increasingly common budgeting tool for managerial accountants; therefore, to assist students in understanding how budgets look in a spreadsheet, all figures pertaining to budgeting will appear as Microsoft Excel® screen captures.
Student-centered writing- Garrison and Noreen write with the student in mind. No concept is ever used without first being defined. Every effort is made to help students understand the material with interesting 'In Business' examples and end of chapter material that corresponds lock-step with the chapter narrative.
