Over the past two decades the use of flexible employment relations has increased in most developed countries. The growth of temporary agency work constitutes a significant component of this development. Organizations are now facing the challenges of managing a ‘blended workforce’, i.e. a workforce consisting of both direct hires and contractors. At a time when Europe, as well as the rest of the world, is facing enhanced global competition and a severe labor market crisis, an understanding of temporary employment practices becomes all the more acute. With the evolution of the use of agency work in the Western world over the past decade, the chapters in this volume show how a focus on the management and organization of temporary agency work can be helpful to see possibilities and pitfalls for the use of temporary employment in the wake of changed employment practices and challenges to labor market stability and welfare structures.
Together, the new case studies presented in this volume provide a wide scope of analysis of the organization and management of temporary agency work, offering a much-needed contribution to the discussion of issues and priorities that guide and shape organizational practices today. Its particular uniqueness lies in the empirical richness and variety of local case studies and the way in which these are related to wider policy aims, ideological shifts, and the dynamics of organizational practice, with a particular focus on the organization and management of ‘blended workforces’.

About the Author
Bas Koene is assistant Professor of Organization and Human Resource Management at Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He studies human agency and leadership in processes of institutional change and organizational development, especially regarding the organization of work and the management of temporary employment. He has published in journals such as Leadership Quarterly, Human Resource Management Journal, Journal of Organizational Change Management, Personnel Reveiw, Human Relations, and Accounting Organizations and Society. Bas Koene is also director of the RSM Case Development Centre.
Christina Garsten is Professor of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University and of Globalization and Organization at Copenhagen Business School. She is Chair of the Executive Board of Score (Stockholm Center for Organizational Research, Stockholm University and Stockholm School of Economics). Her research interests focus on flexible forms of employment, subjectivity and identity (Workplace Vagabonds). More recent research engages with transparency and accountability in global organizations (Transparency in a New World Order, ed. w. M. Lindh de Montoya; Organizing Transnational Accountability, ed. w. M. Boström), corporate ethics (Ethical Dilemmas in Management, ed. W. T. Hernes), and the role of think tanks in influencing policy agendas.
Nathalie Galais is senior Lecturer at the Department of Organizational and Social Psychology at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg, Germany. Her main research interests include worker-organization relationship in non-standard work-arrangements, effects of contingent work-status on team climate and workers’ identity formation. She has conducted research on skill-development and health-outcomes of different groups of contingent workers for Federal Institutes such as the Federal Institute for Vocational Education and Training, the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the Ministry of Education and Research. She has published the results of this research in Human Relations and the International Journal of Selection and Assessment.

If you are an international customer, we ship internationally by UPS Worldwide Expedited. The average delivery time is 1 to 2 weeks, and each shipment can be fully tracked at www.ups.com. For international shipments, it is important to provide a valid phone number with your order. Most international shipments are delivered within 2 weeks. The only exceptions are when the customer has not provided a valid phone number and there are import duties which UPS needs to collect before making final delivery. In those cases, the package will be held at a nearby UPS Access Point until the customer either picks up the package in person or makes arrangements over the phone with UPS to release the package for final delivery. Our shipping charge only covers international postage. Import duties vary widely by country and are additional. We thoroughly clean all books that we offer for sale and do all basic book-repairs ourselves. Basic repairs include repairing slanted bindings, applying additional glue to hinges that have become excessively loose, hinge-tape repairs for damaged hinges, minor binding split repairs, gluing small tears in exterior of covers, removal (as much as possible) of black marker marks to covers of ex-library books, removal of smaller non-permanent stickers, straightening of minor bowing to covers or spine, and applying jacket protectors to books with torn or fragile jackets or for especially pristine or collectible books. We do not do major binding repairs, and any un-repairable binding splits or general weakness in binding will be noted. Any significant repairs such as a hinge-tape repair will also be noted. These repairs do not usually change the underlying condition grade, but do make the book more presentable. Some books are beyond help and will be listed as "Fair/Acceptable" or "Poor". Our books are graded conservatively with library books never graded above "Good" and used books rarely graded above "Very Good". Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Salish Sea Books, Bellingham, Washington, U.S.A., without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
SHIPPING POLICY: For Domestic orders, we ship through the US Post Office and orders can be tracked at www.usps.com. Orders priced at $250 and above will require a signature upon delivery.
For International orders, we ship exclusively through UPS using their Worldwide Expedited shipping service. This is highly reliable courier service with most orders delivered within 1 to 2 weeks. Shipments can be tracked at www.ups.com.
For international shipments, it is important to provide a valid phone number so that you can be contacted by UPS (if necessary) to make final delivery arrangements. Our shipping price is for postage only. Import duties vary widely by country and are the responsibility of the customer.
RETURNS POLICY: We offer an unconditional 30 day return policy: books can be returned for any reason if sent back within 30 days of the date they are received. The buyer is responsible for shipping charges unless the book was mis-described, in which case we will be responsible for all shipping charges. If you need to return a book, please contact us through ABE and we will forward full return instructions.
