viii, 279, [1]p ad., engraved frontispiece by Isaac Taylor. 12mo. Contemporary tree calf, gilt banded spine, red morocco label; upper joint cracked but firm, some wear towards foot. Armorial bookplate of William Frederick Webb. ESTC N22567. William Frederick Webb, 1829–1899, was a High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire and officer in the British Army. A big-game hunter, Webb spent time in Africa, and in 1851 when he fell ill with fever, summoned the explorer David Livingstone to assist. Webb recovered and the two became good friends. In 1861, Webb purchased Newstead Abbey in Nottinghamshire for £147,000, and Livingstone made regular visits, sometimes staying for months.
