From the Author
Malibu’s Cooking Again is a uniquely "Malibu", colorfully illustrated cookbook combining recipes from celebrity chefs and prominent local cooks, together with stories celebrating heroism and kindness in the face of a natural disaster. It’s a look "behind the scenes" in Malibu, reflecting not only elegance and fine dining, but also the bonds formed by families and communities whenever good food, warmth and stories are shared and passed down through the generations.
Some of the special recipes contributed to this cookbook by well-known area restaurants include Wolfgang Puck's Granita's Tempura Calamari, Valentino's Wrapped Eggplants, the Brown Derby Restaurant's Cobb Salad and Grapefruit Chiffon Cake, ZenZero's Grilled Scallion Marinated Shrimp Salad, Saddle Peak Lodge's Quails with Red Wine Sauce, Taverna Tony's Greek Caviar Dip, Geoffrey's Eggplant Torte with Tomato-Basil Sauce, and Tra Di Noi's Ossobuco Alle Verdure.
In addition, there is Primi Restaurant's Involtini di Swordfish and Shrimp, Moonshadows' Clam Chowder, Lula's Chicken Stuffed with Dried Red Chilis and Orange Marinade, Drago's Maccheroncini with Langostino and Black Truffles, Monroe's Rigatoni Dudley, Coogie's Beach Café's Pumpkin Bread, Michael's Chicken Goat Cheese Salad, Bambu's Marinated Grilled Lamb Chops and French Fries, Duck Duck Mousse's Roasted New Potato and Sausage Salad, The Chart House's Mud Pie, Alice's Stir Fried Sea Scallops, Beau Rivage's Gnocchi Romana, Marmalade's Thai Noodle Salad and Oat Currant Scones, Malibu Seafood's Ceviche, Carrots' Chicken Salad, and The Godmother's Vegetable Soup with Basil and Pine Nuts.
But Malibu’s Cooking Again is more than just a collection of recipes from the area's finest restaurants. Its companion stories and recipes from firefighters and Malibu families make it a uniquely heartwarming reminder of the value of sharing personal culinary heritage as found in few other cookbooks. This book grew out of the Malibu community’s desire to help those whose lives had been devastated by a terrible firestorm which swept out of the hills above Malibu. But in a larger sense, it celebrates the act of coming together to share good food, both in our families and our community, as one of our greatest gifts. As A.J. Liebling once said, "A good meal in troubled times is always that much salvaged from disaster." --Cathy Rogers, Editor
