How can ward nurses and their managers improve the quality of patient care in NHS hospitals? How can they make more time to achieve the necessary changes? This handbook proposes two routes for making time for patients. The first is to examine the way nurses currently spend time with and away from patients. The second is to link responsibility for the delivery of patient care to control of ward resources and to vest control of the resources as close to the ward as possible. This will make it easier to deploy all the resources of the ward - including staff time, the mix of skills and the availble equipment - effectively.
