Judge Tim Quinn finds himself in the middle of a string of murders that cover up a murderous conspiracy to fix cases on the US Court of Appeals. Complicating Quinn's attempts to uncover the conspirators is his complex relationship with Chief Judge Harry Winston, the urbane southern gentleman who helped Tim's relationship with Vicky Hauser, the federal prosecutor whose aid he must enlist to infiltrate the scheme. Their sexual tryst comes back to threaten Tim's marriage and his life in the novel's gripping and deadly climax.
