- Book 1 of 2: Rabbi Berel Wein on the High Holidays
When the shofar sounds on Rosh Hashanah, the congregation rises to the most powerful moment of the year's prayers: the Musaf service built on three ancient sections — Malchuyos (Majesty), Zichronos (Memory), and Shofros (Resonance). Composed in the Talmudic academy of Rav more than 1,900 years ago, these prophetic verses have stirred Jewish hearts in every generation. Yet for many worshippers, their meaning slips by in the rush of the service.
In Majesty, Memory & Resonance, the renowned rabbi, historian, and beloved teacher Rabbi Berel Wein opens this towering liturgy and makes it intimate. Drawing on more than eighty years of Rosh Hashanah memories — from his father's crowded Chicago shul to the pulpits of America and Jerusalem — he walks through every verse of the shofar service, explaining not only what the words say, but why they were chosen, where they come from, and how they speak to our lives today.
With warmth, clarity, and the storyteller's gift that made him one of the Jewish world's most cherished voices, Rabbi Wein transforms ten-verse sequences most of us recite by rote into a guided journey through the central ideas of Jewish faith: God's kingship over all creation, the power of remembrance, and the call of the shofar toward redemption.
This is a book for anyone who has ever stood in shul on the Day of Judgment and longed to pray with deeper understanding and feeling.
Inside you'll find:
- A clear, verse-by-verse companion to the entire Rosh Hashanah Musaf shofar service
- Accessible explanations of Malchuyos, Zichronos, and Shofros — and the Aleinu that opens them
- The history and meaning behind the prophetic verses chosen by the sages
- Guidance to bring real kavanah (focused intention) to your High Holiday prayers
- Reflections that turn Majesty, Memory, and Resonance into a blueprint for the whole year
Compact enough to hold beside your machzor and rich enough to return to year after year, Majesty, Memory & Resonance is an ideal companion for the High Holy Days — and a meaningful gift for anyone seeking a more powerful Rosh Hashanah.
