For more than a century from 1857 ships of the Union and Castle lines provided the vital communications link beween Great Brirain and South Africa. Contracts with the governments of both countries for the important carriage of mails created competition between the two and this was an major factor in the formation of Union-Castle Line as one company, from the competitors, in 1900. Union-Castle became iconic in the carriage of mail, passsengers and cargo and famous for building many beautifully proportioned ships, including a number in the liner age dominated by multi-funnel ships, The line also operated cargo vessels alongside its liner services. Like so many famous shippling lines, Union-Castle fell victim to tthe rise of jet travel for passengers and containers for cargo and in 1977 it ceased trading. While most of its ships sailed via the west coast of Africa and serviced major South African ports, others transited the Mediterranean, Red Sea and the East Coat of the African continant. This fine book covers the introduction of the two lines to service, their fierce competition for mail contracts, the eventual merger, the two World Wars and dealing with the changing shipping technologies and other challenges of the years leading to the line's closure. A thorough and in-depth study of one othe great shipping lines. First edition from Patrick Stephens of 1994, 180 pages including four appendices, bibliography, acknowledgements, index and subscribers list. This a little-used ex-library copy, illustrated throughout with b/w and colour photos, colour art including commissioned paintings by Peter Bilas, many document reproductions, colour page at back showing company badges of rank, cut-away accommodation diagramp of Pendennis Castle, flags and funnels, colour map showing line routes, decorated e/papers. Blue hard covers with gilt front decoration and titles VG, library stamp top edge FFEP with issue sheet and crossed bar code lower right corner, library stamp top edge first text page, only one other library stamp in text block, at page 174 (colour badges, profile and flags/funnels), text block otherwise excellent, library stamps upper and vertical page edges as closed, light shelft wear cover lower edges/spine base. Colour art/pictorial DJ is plastic protected and VG with slight damage to .plastic sheet top rear corner, jacket carefully taped to both covers. This large and heavy book (1.4kgs) would require additional postage for international delivery.…

Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to BOP Books, Tauranga, New Zealand, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
High standard of packaging. Insurance applied at purchaser's request/cost. NZ Post does not provide an economy mail service(25 to 45 days delivery schedule)and with few alternative mail services operating Air Mail is the only practical alternative with a international delivery time of three to 10 business days. Postal costs vary according to differing postal zones and potential buyers can obtain accurate post estimates by e-mailing the vendor.
