Mahjong Illustrated: The Sound of Sparrows is a 160-page introduction to the tile-matching game of mahjong, written by Joseph Brant and Xueting C. Ni and published by Amber Books Limited in 2026. The book takes its title from the word mahjong itself - meaning 'sparrow' - and opens with the game's origins in southern China in the early nineteenth century before moving into practical instruction for new players. The book is organized for the beginner. Chapters introduce the full set of 144 tiles, explain the rules and the flow of play, and work through the strategic elements that go beyond luck: pattern recognition, understanding an opponent's hand, and knowing the difference between a kong and a pong. Honour tiles - the four winds and the three dragons - receive their own treatment, as do the mechanics of shuffling and stacking to start a game and the conditions for completing a legal hand. Popular variants and competitive formats are covered as well. The subject sits at the intersection of games, culture, and craft - mahjong is presented not only as a puzzle to be solved but as a social practice with a long history across East Asia and a growing following in North America. It will appeal to anyone curious about the game, whether they are picking up tiles for the first time or looking for a well-illustrated reference. Published in 2026 by Amber Books Limited.
