William Gilbert's De Magnete (London, 1600) is one of the foundational texts of experimental science ? the first systematic investigation of magnetism and static electricity, introducing the term electricus (from the Greek elektron) and establishing the experimental method as the basis of natural philosophy. Gilbert described his experiments with his model Earth called the terrella, made the claim that gravity was due to the same magnetic force, and believed this held the Moon in orbit ? a claim far closer to the truth than Aristotelian theory. This 1958 Basic Books edition reproduces the Burndy Library copy of Silvanus Phillips Thompson's 1900 Chiswick Press translation ? itself originally issued in a limited edition of 250 copies for the Gilbert Club ? together with Thompson's separately paginated Notes on the De Magnete, making this the first widely accessible edition of the most important English translation. The series was edited by Derek J. Price of the Institute for Advanced Study, the historian of science who later coined the term "Big Science" and transformed the field of scientometrics. Facsimile engravings from Gilbert's original are reproduced throughout, including the celebrated terrella experiments and compass illustrations. A significant history of science reference in reading copy condition, priced accordingly.
