From New Year's Day to New Year's Eve: The traditions in the Alpine region all year round
Customs and rituals have something calming about them: they structure everyday life and have often passed into flesh and blood so that they are carried out without thought. For example, Christoph Frühwirth works when he makes three signs of the cross on the loaf of bread before cutting – to thank the Holy Trinity.
He knows such and many other customs from his childhood in the pre-alpine country. In this book, he has gathered them together and traced their origins - also with the help of conversations with locals. A humorous collectible that introduces the many rituals of the peasant year and explains their significance.
- Stop the hustle and bustle: how rituals lead to deceleration
- From Shiachperchten and Maytrees: tradition that is fun
- The tradition of the Alpine region in the changing seasons
- Why rituals ensured survival for farmers and are still important today.
- How lots and holidays determine customs and activities at the court.
Kirtag, Thanksgiving, carnival: the festivals celebrate as they fall
The farmer's year is traditionally strongly structured - in line with the seasons and nature, the fields must be cultivated and the livestock must be cared for. Christoph Frühwirth introduces the diverse customs that have developed from the age-old knowledge of the right time for certain activities. In many cases, celebratory traditions have also been created that are maintained to this day: the alpine drive or spiritual rituals such as smoking in the rough nights have retained as well as wild perch runs and exuberant Kirtage.
A book that makes rituals, customs and the knowledge of them come alive and at the same time encourages you to pause: Christoph Frühwirth makes you want to deal closer to the many festivals and traditions from the Alpine region.
