Penny discovers that her friend Sir Spike Stilton, who has been visiting her in Nine Woods, where she is studying her craft, has been kidnapped. She fears her friend Timothy Winslow III will be next. To save her friends, she embarks on a journey with fellow witch Juniper. They reach Timothy just in time-and the trio venture off into the first of seven realms that they must conquer to free Spike. Along the way, they face evilness and trickery but also meet talking animals, fairies, and other fighters willing to help.
