Karl Gone-Squinti is a teenage student of sense magic at the Academy in Fartonia, a steam-powered world where practitioners manipulate taste, touch, and smell to cast powerful spells.
When he and his friends, Strangely and Showie, are ambushed by impostors, it marks the beginning of a larger threat.
Alien beings have infiltrated the neighboring nation of Mainland in search of the Chaos Light, an artefact of immense power. Led by the tyrants Tuja Acae and Tarlan Fnwah, the naroozie draw Fartonia into a conflict with deep historical roots.
As attacks strike closer to home, Karl and his friends must rely on a group with closer ties to him than he first realises, The Section Nine, to navigate betrayal and war.
