MAGHRIBI, RUH ATTAR, HAYDAR Life & Poems Translation & Introduction Paul Smith Maghribi (1350-1407) travelled in North-West Africa where he was invested with the dervish mantle by a master who traced himself back to the great Ibn ’Arabi who had a great influence on him in the philosophy of the Unity of Being. In his ghazals one can see clearly the spiritual influence also of Sana’i, ‘Attar, Rumi and ‘Iraqi. Ruh Attar was one of the greatest poets in Shiraz during the 14th c. yet is virtually unknown today. He knew of course all the poets in Shiraz including the greatest… Hafiz, the satirist Obeyd Zakani, the princess poet Jahan Khatun. His poems are often very powerful and eloquent and spiritual. Haydar was a controversial poet in Shiraz in the 14th century. He was a poet of considerable worth as a dervish poet, as one can see from the examples in this book.
