What happens when a greedy little magpie takes one shiny thing too many? Discover the hilarious and heartwarming story of Maggie — the bird who took everything, until one clever farmer taught her a lesson she’d never forget.
Maggie the Magpie: A Rhyming Tale of Theft and Consequence is a beautifully illustrated, laugh-out-loud children's picture book packed with rhythm, mischief, and a moral that sticks. Written in fun rhyming verse, this original story is perfect for shared reading at home, in classrooms, or as a bedtime favourite.
Maggie is a bird with a beady eye for treasures — but they’re never hers. Whether it’s silver spoons, glittering jewels, or even schoolchildren’s sandwiches, Maggie can’t help herself. She snatches, grabs, and hoards. But stealing isn’t a victimless crime, and the village has had enough. Instead of punishment, one quiet but clever man — Farmer Bob — hatches a plan to teach her a valuable lesson in honesty, empathy, and personal responsibility.
This poetic tale takes young readers on a journey from selfishness to self-awareness. As Maggie’s own belongings are mysteriously taken, she begins to understand what it feels like to lose what’s yours — and why doing the right thing matters more than shiny things ever could.
Why parents, teachers, and children love this book:
✔️ Engaging rhyming text that’s fun to read aloud and easy for children to follow
✔️ Soft, expressive artwork that brings emotion, humour, and heart to every page
✔️ A relatable moral lesson about actions and consequences, delivered gently and cleverly
✔️ Ideal for early readers, ages 3 to 8 — whether at home, school, nursery, or the library
✔️ Sparks valuable conversations about right and wrong, kindness, fairness, and change
If your child enjoys books like The Gruffalo, What the Ladybird Heard, or Oi Frog, they’ll love Maggie’s cheeky antics and the satisfying twist that shows even a thief can change.
This is more than a story about a bird — it’s a playful parable that invites children to think about how their actions affect others and what it means to make things right. With clever rhymes, heartwarming redemption, and a quirky sense of humour, Maggie the Magpie is a book that kids will want to read again and again.

Store description
We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first visit or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
