The principal purpose of the book concerns bringing into the public sphere knowledge of and insight into the relationships between the writer of popular short fiction and the magazine illustrator, whose work assisted readers in constructing a visualization of the story in popular American magazines of the first half of the twentieth century. A relatively small number of art historians and specialists who study various aspects of American popular culture have bothered to seek and to uncover information relative to those men and women who provided the illustrations that accompanied and complemented the short-story fiction of the great magazines in the early twentieth-century. With Sinclair Lewis as the focal point, this study seeks to cast a beam or two of light upon that subject. Few literary historians and critics will question Sinclair Lewis' relatively high standing among the novelists of his day. However, few readers of those works understand or even realize Lewis' outpouring of short stories into the trough of popular magazines of that period; fewer current members of the general reading public - firmly anchored to their televisions, cell phones, and twittering/tweeting machines - grasp the quantity of popular magazines available throughout the United States during 1900-1950; even fewer realize the extent that the editors and publishers of those periodicals provided poets and fiction writers, both the aspiring young and the established mature among them, with opportunities to display their crafts before hundreds of thousands of American readers. Therefore, with Sinclair Lewis as the focal point, this study seeks to cast a beam or two of light upon a subject that has dwelt, for too long, in the far niches of the histories of art and literature.
