If you’ve ever wanted to understand how AI is truly implemented in life sciences and healthcare—without getting lost in formulas—this book is your guide. Written by Corina J. Shtir, PhD, a statistician and former Head & VP of Precision Medicine at Thermo Fisher Scientific, AI and Machine Learning Unpacked demystifies complex algorithms through a strategic and practical lens. It bridges the gap between data science and decision-making, equipping executives, clinicians, and policymakers to engage meaningfully with the technologies transforming their fields. AI is revolutionizing healthcare—but often in ways obscured by jargon, oversimplified headlines, or opaque technical detail. This book cuts through that noise. With precision and clarity, Dr. Shtir explains how data becomes action, how models must be interpreted responsibly, and what leadership must understand to evaluate AI solutions effectively.
Inside, you’ll discover:
- Clear distinctions between AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and AI Agents.
- Illustrative analogies that make even abstract machine learning concepts intuitive and relatable.
- Real-world examples and visual takeaways
- Key metrics and evaluation strategies that translate model performance into trustworthy decisions
“Corina has encapsulated in one slender book the practical essence of machine learning as reduced to practice in health care broadly… with real-world examples of their use and value in healthcare and life sciences. This book will enable business leaders to work with their IT and bioinformatics teams or vendors to choose and implement the right ML tool or tools to meet their needs.” — Timothy J. Triche, MD, PhD, Professor, Pathology & Pediatrics, Keck School of Medicine at USC, Director, Center for Personalized Medicine, CHLA
“For today’s Life Sciences executives, understanding AI/ML is no longer optional—it’s essential. Dr. Corina Shtir has given me the tools and confidence to engage meaningfully with our scientists and IT teams, elevating the quality and depth of our conversations. An invaluable resource!" — Rob Brainin, JD, CEO, Champions Oncology; Former Executive VP and CBO at Veracyte
“An essential tool for the non-expert executive, providing a practical guide and gateway into a rapidly emerging field that will become required knowledge for all business leaders in the future.” — Peter Silvester, Founder of Q7 Yacht Designs; Former President, Life Sciences Solutions, Thermo Fisher Scientific
"Dr. Shtir masterfully explains the technical foundations of AI and ML without any complex equations and shows how these powerful tools can unlock and expand human creativity to improve our everyday lives." — Hakan Sakul, PhD, President, Precision Dx Strategies; Former VP and Head of Diagnostics, Pfizer
“A clear and straightforward practical survey of the often-cryptic world of Artificial Intelligence… accessible to the lay person yet highly useful to the practitioner.” — Scott Taylor, MS, PhD, CEO, Diapeutic; COO, Histologics

Store description
**Please note our transit times are from the date of dispatch.** We first started out as “The Paperback Exchange,” a chain of physical bookstores where we would part exchange your beloved books for new stories to transport you to faraway places. However, as shopping started to evolve to online shops and marketplaces, we bid our stores goodbye to become “PBShop.” This transition has only allowed us to blossom as we now ship thousands of titles to book lovers across the globe. We pride ourselves in being a community of local book lovers which allows our passion and devotion to shine in everything we do. In 2020 we not only celebrated our 20th birthday but our 1st birthday as being completely employee owned after becoming an E.O.T in September 2019. We are proud to be different and embrace standing apart on a book mountain by working from a virtual inventory which allows us to provide thousands of books that may be difficult to get for your bookshelf or your studies. Working with a number of different suppliers allows us to explore other avenues such as puzzles, sheet music and even stationery so we really do have something for everyone. Life is about being versatile in all realms of existence. If this is your first purchase with us, or you are a returning customer, we would like to welcome you to the PBShop family, for there is no friend as loyal as a book. We are a company who put our customers at the centre of everything we do as we understand the importance of reading because once you learn to read, you will forever be free. There are a whole lot of things in this world of ours that we are yet to explore, which is why we will forever inspire curious minds.…
