cast bronze relief plaque. titled in the cast. 8 ¼ inches in diameter. framed. Émile Louis Picault was a notable 19th century French sculptor, medalist, and plaster modeler, who produced over 500 individual bronzes during his career. He was best known for works featuring allegorical, patriotic, and mythological themes. He originally studied under Louis Royer in Paris [1860-1909], and began to show at the Salon from 1863. His works were known for their intricate details and purposeful sense of characterization. Many of his most popular bronzes depict literary subjects, Egyptian figures, French heroes, workers, etc. He enjoyed great commercial success during his lifetime and received many important commissions for monuments and memorials. Examples of work are held by the Chambery Museum, the Clermont-Ferrand Museum, the Maubeuge Museum and the Troyes Museum in Paris, France, as well as by numerous other public and private collections.
