Bourke was not a detached observer. He fought beside the men he wrote about, yet his rare combination of soldier’s insight and scholar’s curiosity gives his account a power few historians can match. Beyond the clash of sabers and the frozen ground of the Powder River country, Bourke saw the tragedy of cultures in collision. His writing reveals not only how the U.S. Army hunted the last resisting Plains tribes, but also how those tribes fought to preserve their way of life against impossible odds.
This rediscovered work stands as both a gripping piece of frontier literature and an invaluable primary source for anyone studying the Indian Wars, the frontier army, or the fate of the Plains tribes after Custer. Bourke’s voice—honest, observant, sometimes wry—captures the raw human reality behind one of the final campaigns of the American West.
Perfect for readers who admire authentic western history, Native American resistance, and firsthand military storytelling, this is John G. Bourke at his most vivid and enduring.
