8vo, pp. [3]-26, [1] advertisement; without the half title; disbound. First and only edition. The 'Music Speech' at Cambridge had become an occasion for referring to the presence of the ladies at the commencement: the format seems also to have become established that the orator should deliver a speech in Latin prose, and that it should be followed by a translation, in English verse. These are followed by a poem on the opening of the new Senate House, which had been designed by James Gibbs. The first poem makes a jocular reference to Oxford: Ladies! we own our elder Sister's Merit, The forward Girl had e'er a bustling Spirit. 'Tis there Politeness ev'ry Genius fits, Their Heads are Courtiers, and their Squires are Wits. (p. 11) John Taylor (1704-66) was at this time a young fellow at St John's; he later practised as a lawyer, and then (quite late in life) was ordained.
