Two 8 x 10" movie stills from "Dixie", one of The Chronicles of America Photoplays, a series undertaken by the Yale University Press as attempt to translate their history books of the same name into film. The two stills show the beginning and end of the Civil War -- "With gay confidence, the South toasts the success of the cause" and "At Appomattox. A mark of respect to General Lee, beloved leader and valiant general". The highly idealized and improbable portrayals in the two images show (1) Robert E. Lee as played by J. Barney Sherry raising a toast on the porch of a plantation surrounded by men on horseback and many slaves (with trees dripping with Spanish moss); and (2) General Lee on horseback at Appomattox, with General Grant (played by Albert Phillips) doffing his hat and a number of other hat-doffing Union officers. Both images show wear, with corner loss, though the corners are present.
