About this Item
12mo. 4 x 6.5 inches. [22] + 69 pp. + [3] pp. Rebound in half calf, over marbled boards; spine with raised bands, decorated gilt, with contrasting maroon title label, gilt. Illustrated by one plate, which forms the frontispiece and by tailpiece vignettes. Epictetus (AD 55-135) was a Greek stoic philosopher, who moved to Rome before his banishment from the city. He lived a life of great simplicity, as shown in the illustration, with a lamp being his only significant possession. The Enchridion, of which this is a verse translation, is a popular digest of The Discourses, both transcribed and edited by his pupil, Arrian. There were several editions with the title, 'Epicteth Enchiridion' (1692, 1695, 1697, 1702, 1716), followed by the present edition with a new title and the addition of a frontispiece. At the beginning are several poems in praise of Epictetus, by various hands, and a short life by the translator. It was reprinted with this title again in 1764. It is often found without the charming frontispiece. ART / LITERATURE CLASSICS LIT. NON-FICTION CLASSICS POETRY ART / LITERATURE. Seller Inventory # 19098
