Some wear to extremities and occasional, mainly to title page and preliminaries; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by ornamental title page border, headpiece vignette and by headpiece vignettes and initials in red. Limited edition of the Essay on Friendship by the French Renaissance philosopher and poet, Michel de Montaigne (1533-92), who established the essay as a literary genre. Included with it are the XXIX Sonnets by Estienne De la Boetie (1530-1563), poet and essayist and friend of Montaigne. Both translated by US poet, Louis How (1873-1947). The Riverside Press was founded in Boston, Massachusetts in 1852 by Henry Oscar Houghton, joint founder of the Houghton Mifflin Company in 1880 (Biblio website).
