About this Item
J[ames] Fenimore Cooper: THE MONIKINS. New York: Hurd & Houghton, 1865 edition (first published in 1835). This is a custom-bound copy in quarter leather, leather spine, and handmade marbleed paper, veritably a museum piece. Anyone would be extremely pleased with this specimen. Though immortalized by his Leatherstocking adventures, it's not as well known that Cooper was also a pioneer of science fiction. The satirical fantasy novel Monikins regards the discovery of a Lost Race, a hidden and very advanced ape race. He wrote it midway through writing and publishing his vastly popular Leatherstocking tales, and his enormous fan base just didn't want anything but frontier adventure, so his fantasy novel never became popular and is comparatively rare. It probably didn't help that his own daughter in contributing commentaries to a posthumous edition showed no understanding of the highest flights of imagination and condemned the book as a failure, which it most certainly is not. It draws its context more or less from Swift's Gulliver and from the whole now-forgotten genre of "fabulous voyage" stories written a century before the advent of Jules Verne. A sea captain obtains four monkeys only to discover afterwards that they can speak, and would like to be returned to their home, an advanced society divided between an unknown pair of polar islands which, as with Swift's Gulliver, provided Cooper ample opportunity for ironic observation and satiric tweaking of deplorable human institutions.
