It is also known as the Mongolian jird. It is a member of the family Muridae and is a common tiny pet due to its endearing appearance and sociable nature.
The Mongolian gerbil is easily recognizable by its round, fat body, short limbs, and long, fluffy tail. They can be found with fur hues ranging from agouti and cinnamon to black and white. In their natural environment, they dig burrows, so they have huge, black eyes and long, curled claws.
Mongolian gerbils have huge cheek pouches that they use to take food to their burrows for later eating, making this animal truly one-of-a-kind. They eat a wide range of things, from seeds to insects to vegetables.
Mongolian gerbils are gregarious creatures that construct elaborate networks of burrows to call home in the wild.
The ease with which they can sprint and jump has earned them a reputation for speed and agility. They are also well-known for their sophisticated verbal, olfactory, and nonverbal modes of communication.
Mongolian gerbils are fun to have around and require little in the way of care. They can form strong bonds with humans if given the necessary care and attention to foster an outgoing and inquisitive personality. Their owners can spend hours watching them engage in amusing activities like digging, burrowing, and climbing.
