8vo. 5.5 x 8.5 inches. [viii] + 452 pp. separate half titles for each section. Bound in original calf; spine in compartments with raised bands and gilt lines. Extremities worn, some loss at head and tail of spine and hinges starting to crack. Occasional foxing and a margin tear not affecting legibility of text; otherwise a very good copy. Decorated by title page, half title and headpiece vignettes. These collected writings are divided into three parts, Poems, including The Art of Dancing; Pieces, Religious, Moral, and Metaphysical, including A Free Enquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil in Six Letters; and Political Tracts, including The Objections to the Taxation of our American Colonies, by the Legislature of Great Britain.Written in the Year 1765. In the latter he argues that the right and 'the expediency of exerting that right in the present conjuncture.are.indisputably clear.' The first edition appeared in 1761. Published anonymously but known to be the work of Jenyns Soame (1704-87), a wealthy author and politician. Educated at Cambridge, he later served as one of the MPs for Cambridgeshire, 1741-54.
