Item description from seller

A black-and-white photograph of the barefoot children of migrant workers in California in the 1960s, reminiscent of the Depression-era photographs of Dorthea Lange and Walker Evans. This 7" x 9" image was taken by Bob Shumway (1930-2012), a staff photographer for the Long Beach Independent Press Telegraph from 1956 to 1977. According to an Associated Press caption pasted to the verso of the photo, it was part of a photo essay titled "Children of the Sun" which cast a spotlight on the children of migrant farm workers who follow their nomadic parents from place to place. "Their homes are the autos or trucks they travel in or, for the more fortunate, a tent. One father said about one of his recent jobs, 'I had to pick five trees to get one box of lemons. They were paying 18 cents a box. I picked nine boxes in eight hours. How do you feed a family on that kind of money?'".
