8vo. 8.5 x 5.25 inches. 167 + [1] pp. Bound in half pale blue cloth, gilt, over pink patterned boards. Spine sunned, but otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by 7 plates including frontispiece. An account of the career at court of Jeanne Becu du Barry (1747-93), official mistress of Louis XV from 1768-74. She went to the guillotine in 1793. By the writer Matieu-Francois Pidanzat de Mairobert (1727-78) and edited by the historian, Eveline Criickshanks (1926-2021). Illustrated by the Scottish watercolour artist, William Russell Flint (1880-1969). Text based on English versions (from 1777) of the Anecdotes sur la Comtesse du Barry, first published in London in 1776.
