8vo. 5 x 7.25 inches. xx + 280 + [4] pp. index. Bound in red gilt panelled morocco; spine in compartments with raised bands, decorated gilt, with morocco title label, gilt. Inner dentelles. All edges gilt. A little wear to extremities, spine and board edges darkened and an edge stain affecting last 20 pages; otherwise a very good crisp copy. Illustrated by portrait frontispiece. Loosely inserted as extra illustration: engraving of James II, by Vertue after Kneller, detached from another title. A collection of material relating to the conduct of the Royal Navy, 1660-73, mostly in the form of letters from James Duke of York, Lord High Admiral. It covers the period of the Second Anglo-Dutch war of 1665-67 and the start of the Third War in 1672 and refers to naval activity off the North African coast. Many letters are concerned with administrative matters, and the provisioning and manning of the fleet, with instructions to agents, but orders to captains and commanders proceeding to sea and some lists of ships are also included. A letter of March 1661 forbids the wearing of the 'Flag of Union' by merchant shipping. The main text is preceded by' A Brief History of the Restauration.' Under the terms of the Test Act of 1673, James, as a Catholic, had to vacate the office of Lord High Admiral. A scarce title. (ESTC T147011).
