20,[1]pp., printed in double columns, plus [7]pp. of advertisements, and advertisements on the wrappers. Original printed green wrappers. Wrappers lightly worn, text lightly tanned. Very good. In a cloth clamshell box, spine gilt. The main essay, by Robert Sloan of the Salt Lake Herald, is devoted to the products and manufactures of Utah. There are also companion essays by Col. O.J. Hollister, "collector of Internal Revenue," and by S.A. Kenner of the Beaver Enterprise on the same subject. George Meears, a local merchant, solicited these essays "on the many natural advantages of Utah Territory" on the occasion of the Territorial Fair, and awarded $50 to Sloan for his winning essay. The three essays all tout the virtues of Utah and its natural resources in a serious manner. A final one-page essay at the end, perhaps written by Meears himself, takes a more sarcastic tone, asserting that "the chief products of Utah are babies, religious differences and big mines." It also takes jabs at Mormons, polygamy, and at the "moral, religious, and official cranks" that run the Territory. A scarce and conflicted piece of Utah boosterism. Seller Inventory # 47003
