This is the 8th or 9th revised edition - the Preface is imprecise - of a work first published in 1899. The senior editor's participation began with the fifth edition (1918). It is likely that the load components of any commercial building built between 1899 and the date of publication, and most built afterward that do not employ prestressed or reinforced concrete, can be reverse engineered from the materials data given here. The empasis is on the effect of stresses and elasticity on volumes of wood, stone, concrete, steel, etc., to points of shear, deformation, or fracture. About 837 non-consecutively numbered pages, with tables, figures, and halftones; plus vii pages, Preface, and Contents; plus 13 pages, Index; References intermittently at chapter ends, or footnoted. DJ is scraped, tattered, shows color loss, and has been patch-taped; boards are clean and sound; text is strong and clean, excepting pages XIX-10, which has a smudge, and XXIV-1, which has pencil underlinings.
