There are about 240 photographs and various ephemera assembled by the economically comfortable Norcross family in Los Angeles during a time when it was largely an agricultural settlement and the entertainment industry had not come to dominate the economy. In addition to the many family photos are the notices and papers of daily life - train stubs and schedules; handwritten notes, ribbons awarded at the San Fernando Valley Fair (first place for needlework, numerous playbills, school commencement programs, greeting cards, Christmas cards, letters still in envelopes, grocery receipts, newspaper clippings, and wedding invitations (followed by lots - and lots and lots - or birth announcements and baby shower greetings). One item from NYC, is an advertising item for Frida Hempel as Jenny Lind, at a historical centennial concert at Carnegie Hall in 1920. According to several pasted articles, Walter H. Norcross (who went by his middle name, Hull), was a veteran of the 11th Aero Squadron in the First World War, expert citrus grower and an avid fisherman, married Mary Elizabeth McDermet of Abingdon, Illinois, on June 1st, 1920, and settled at first in Central Point, Oregon. She, the daughter of an insurance agent, was already teaching both music and physical education there. Thus begins this particular American saga, carefully documented over the next few years, as the couple welcome their first child and move into a brand-new L.A. bungalow. The many photographs depict, along with domestic and family scenes, landscapes viewed along various road trips - beaches, California missions, citrus groves, small-town parades, submarines at a naval base, boardwalk piers, and so forth. 49 leaves/98 pages, black, decent condition considering. Lacebound covers in excellent condition. Landscape orientation, 7 1/4" x 12", but the really impressive part is the thickness - 2 3/4" - demonstrating how this slim volume is stuffed to the gills with memorabilia. A few pages are upside down and some items are detached from the page, there are also some loose items, perhaps a missing item or two, though hard to tell.
