Item description from seller

Rare first impression of the first Italian edition of Joseph Roth's masterpiece "Radetzky March". Tranduzione de R. Poggioli [Translated by R. Poggioli]. In the Italian language. ***Very good in pale grey covers with black titles to the spine, and black and blue titles and double white borders to the front cover. Priced at 10 lire on the bottom of the spine. The edges of the covers are just slightly creased, nicked and rubbed, with light creases to the spine. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions. Pages clean. The two-page Indice [Index] at the back of the book is uncut at the top edge [could be carefully cut open if so wished]. ***In a rare example of the colour-illustrated thin paper dustwrapper, which has a fairly large chip to the top edge of the front panel and adjoining head of the spine. Small chips to the corners of the dustwrapper. Small loss to the tail of the spine of the dustwrapper. Small closed tears and creasing to the top edge of the back panel of the dustwrapper. With a small contemporaneous violet ink square bordered stamp on the back panel of the dustwrapper stating 'Aumento 5% 26 Fahr. 1940-XVIII' [import tax?]. Back panel of the dustwrapperis rubbed and discoloured [being a plain white background].***200mm x 134mm. 458 pages including two-page Indice [Index] at the back of the book. ***"Radetzky March" tells the story of the decline and fall of the Austro-Hungarian Empire through the lives and fortunes of three generations of the Trotta family. ***Joseph Roth (1894-1939) was an Austrian writer and journalist. He was forced out of his country because of the rise of Nazism. ***First impression of the first Italian edition in its extremely rare, fragile, original colour-illustrated 1935 outer dustwrapper, with striking cover art showing a falling soldier. ***Of interest to collectors of original European first editions by Joseph Roth. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.…
