[Canton 1861]. Single sheet map on thin tender paper, printed in red, English names, ca 69 x 59 cm., heavily mended on verso, a few spots missing, slighly misaligned, 9 old folds, stable, solid, sold "as is." RARE EARLY WORK The map has blue pencil on the verso stating: N.B. Dennys: TREATY PORTS OF CHINA AND JAPAN.1861. * The correct citation should be: THE TREATY PORTS OF CHINA AND JAPAN. A COMPLETE GUIDE TO THE OPEN PORTS OF THOSE COUNTRIES, TOGETHER WITH PEKING, YEDO, HONG KONG AND MACAO. FORMING A GUIDE BOOK & VADE MECUM FOR TRAVELLERS, MERCHANTS, AND RESIDENTS IN GENERAL. By Wm. Fred. Mayers, N. B. Dennys, and Chas. King. Compiled and edited by N. B. Dennys, London 1867, Trubner. * While we are unable to confirm this map is from this book it just may be vis-a-vis the pencil note. * The work is early. It shows Canton from the top center with Gough's Fort and the walled city just below that, Yunetan at the far left; Home of Lepers at far right; lower left shows the Coal depot, lower right sows To Whampoa on the river and the Custom House for salt. * The work show much detail, important houses, temples, streets, Honam and lower central, and that area is where the map simply exceeds its border outline and continues below. * The scale shows perhaps English feet. English is written throughout the work, including some navigational guides ie: Dutch folly; Allied Landing Place, Mud flat left bare when the tide is out et al. Various factories, rice fields, Shamien site are noted. * Condition: While the map is complete within its borders, there are a couple of spots of loss where small pieces have departed; the mending was copious and has a border of additional paper around the edges to give strength to the whole. The map is stable, but printed on very old thin paper, and is rebacked on a stiffer paper. As is the case with many older maps, there is some poor registry where pieces of paper were joined, which was common practice formaps of this early period, as different printing plates did not always justify perfectly. Nevertheless, being such an early map, it is a superb candidate for framing and library display. All in all its a nice example of Canton from an early period. Seldom found on the market for sale anymore. * BIBLIOIGRAPHY: H. Cordier Sinica: 2211 H. Cordier: Japonica: 588 *.
