Made in the West explores the remarkable history of Western functional art—the objects created not simply to be admired, but to be used, worked with, lived alongside, and passed from one generation to another.
From the workshops of skilled leatherworkers to the ranches and homesteads of the American West, this book examines how necessity, landscape, culture, and craftsmanship came together to create a distinctive tradition of functional art.
Through the history of Western furniture, leatherwork, saddlery, textiles, metalwork, and other handmade objects, readers will discover the people and skills behind the objects and the stories those objects continue to preserve.
Inside, you'll explore:
• The origins of Western craftsmanship and the landscape that shaped it
• How practical frontier objects developed into recognizable forms of art
• The techniques, materials, and dedication of skilled Western artisans
• Indigenous artistic traditions and their place within the history of Western craft
• Cowboys, ranches, and the objects created for working life
• The development of the romantic image of the American West
• Influential figures and designers who helped shape Western aesthetics
• Why aging craftsmanship and specialized skills are increasingly at risk
• Apprenticeships, mentorship, and efforts to pass traditional knowledge forward
• How contemporary craftspeople are combining heritage techniques with modern technology
• Why handmade craftsmanship continues to matter in an increasingly mass-produced world
At its heart, Made in the West is a story about people and their hands—about knowledge learned through practice, objects shaped by necessity, and traditions that survive because someone chooses to teach them, practice them, and carry them forward.
For readers interested in American history, Western culture, traditional craftsmanship, folk art, furniture, leatherwork, ranch life, and the preservation of handmade traditions, this book offers a thoughtful journey into the objects and people that helped define the character of the West.
The West was not only built. It was made by hand.
