One of Cable's early "romances" of New Orleans, in a colorful illustrated binding. An important contribution to the "local color" genre of American post-Civil War writing. Even in 1880 when Cable wrote this story about a quadroon woman known as Madame Delphine, the French Quarter of New Orleans was sinking into opulent decay. Cable was a groundbreaking Sourthern writer because he wrote about the people of color in the city, not just the elite white former slaveholding class. This copy with a quire of pages that is halfway sprung but it is still holding. Front free patterned endpaper with tear along edge and dangling a bit but still holding. Age browning of pages but a clean copy in general with no former owner name written in. Small dampstain affects lower corner of front and back endpapers, not serious. Cloth binding witrh moderate aging wear but still attractive. Size: 12mo, 125pp + 2pp Ads. Bookseller Inventory # 2364
