In The late 50's Eugene Stoner of the Armalite Corporation invented the 5.56mm (.223-caliber) AR-15, which quickly evolved into the M-16. Armalite sold the rights to Colt which in turn supplied the weapon to the U.S. Military. The problems with the Army's standard M-14 convinced the Pentagon to outfit it's soldiers with this new gun.
