About this Item
1546-1547. Fine engraving on laid paper, showing two peasants' couples dancing to the left. At upper right with signature "HsB"; lettered along upper edge "Her Gregorius Mercz. 3. Marcus April. 4." 5,3 x 7,5 cm.*Pauli No. 178 III (of 3). Bartsch VIII, No. 155. Hollstein, German, III 98. Third state (of 3). Plate 2 from a series of 10 numbered engravings: "Das Bauernfest oder die zwölf Monate" (The peasants' feast or the 12 months). Fine engraving of dancing farmers at a peasant festival, representing the months March and April. Beham's genre prints belong to the most charming depictions of German country life and costumes in the 16th century. The German printmaker and painter Sebald Beham, from 1532, seems to have lived mostly in Frankfurt. Known as one of the so-called "Kleinmeister/Little Masters" from the small scale of his engravings. He was identified as Sebald Beham although since the 17th century he was mistakenly called Hans Sebald Beham on the basis of his monogram HSP or later HSB. - Left upper corner repaired, affecting the plate-number '2'; slightly foxed; thread margins.[(5444)].
