Item description from seller

LYRIC POETRY OF THE ITALIAN RENAISSANCE: AN ANTHOLOGY WITH VERSE TRANSLATIONS, collected by L.R. Lind, with an introduction by Thomas g. Bergin, various translators from different eras, softcover, stated second printing, 1964. BOOK CONDITION: good. The text block is in fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. Minor foxing on all three edges. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The wraps are in fairly good condition (age-tanning and light foxing on back cover, faded front cover, green label on front cover, reading crease along spine). 8 x 5, 334 pages, 15 ounces. XX [From the back cover] In this anthology, 165 Italian poems are printed opposite their verse translations. The most important poets in Italy from the thirteenth to the end of the sixteenth centuries are included, and all of the rare forms of the early Italian lyric - canzone, sestina, madrigal, and ballata - are represented. Highlights of this comprehensive collection are Rossetti's translations of Dante's shorter poems, Ezra Pound's translations of Cavalcanti, and Morris Bishop's versions of Petrarch. Certain poets - Boiardo, Lorenzo de' Medici, Poliziano, Ariosto, and Tasso, among others - are presented for the first time in accurate renderings of some of their best as well as least known poems. In his Introduction, Thomas G. Bergin, Sterling Professor of Romance Languages and Master of Timothy Dwight College of Yale University, discusses this entire period In Italian poetry and its significance for the development of poetry in other lands. Professor L. R. Lind is Chairman of the Classics Department at the University of Kansas. XX Translated by masters of the English tongue, in many instances the poems achieve the effect of spontaneous, freshly written lyrics. The choice of texts and the caliber of the translations are throughout beyond reproach (PAUL G. RUGGIERS, Books Abroad). XX The 165 poems are excellently chosen both for their intrinsic worth and as characteristic of the more than 30 poets included. With Mr. Bergin's brief but admirable Introduction and each author's short biographical note, Mr. Lind has given the general reader much-needed access to the first - and richest - four centuries of the Italian lyric (T. MACALLISTER, Yale Review).
