14 by 8.5 inches. [7]pp on six leaves bound by three staples at the top edge. Tanned and lightly foxed overall with an old horizontal fold, else a very good example. In Trenton, New Jersey, in January 1948 an elderly white junk shop owner was killed and six men were quickly arrested and coerced into signing confessions. Even after they recanted and presented solid alibis, an all-white jury sentenced them to death that August. The case soon drew national attention from civil rights activists and the American left, who cast it as a "new Scottsboro case." The Committee to Free the Trenton Six chaired by Paul Robeson and organized by the Civil Rights Congress issued a forceful call to action. The accompanying artwork (signed "had") evoked a Klan-style lynching, and the fundraising appeal urged supporters to "cut the lynch rope, clip the coupon." The committee began appearing in newspapers in January 1949, and this appeal likely circulated by mail a few months later. A June 17, 1949, advertorial in the Arizona Republic complained of receiving a "bulky envelope" from the committee written in "the pet phraseology of Communists." The appeal predated a February 1950 state Supreme Court decision ordering a retrial. Ultimately, one defendant confessed, another was convicted and died in prison, and the remaining four were acquitted.
