Central to the study of chaos theory, Lyapunov exponents serve as a vital metric for understanding complex dynamical systems. This self-contained text delivers a practical, physics-driven overview of the subject. The book systematically advances from foundational principles and introductory numerical computation methods to the latest contemporary applications in complex dynamics. Readers will find rigorous reviews of real-world algorithms, in-depth performance evaluations, and a wide array of examples that highlight diverse use cases. By outlining essential analytical and computational frameworks, the authors provide the investigative tools required to analyze key phenomena, including system synchronization, spatial localization, and both weak and global chaos across low- and high-dimensional settings. Designed to build comprehensive expertise, this volume is an essential resource for graduate students and veteran physics researchers alike. About the Authors: Arkady Pikovsky serves as a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the University of Potsdam. Beyond his role as a Fellow of the American Physical Society, his editorial work spans positions at Physica D and J. Physics A: Mathematical and Theoretical. His research centers on the nonlinear physics of complex systems, and he is a co-author of Synchronization: A Universal Concept in Nonlinear Sciences. Antonio Politi holds the 6th Century Chair in Physics of Life Sciences at the University of Aberdeen. He is an active Associate Editor for Physical Review E, as well as a Fellow of both the Institute of Physics and the American Physical Society. His recognized contributions to the field have earned him the Humboldt Prize and the Gutzwiller Prize from the Max-Planck Institute for Complex Systems, and he is a co-author of Complexity: Hierarchical Structures and Scaling in Physics.…
