MacAskill was one of Nova Scotia's best-known photographers, valued especially for his seascapes and images of sailing vessels. He became internationally known as a marine photographer and his photographs were used extensively for advertising by the Nova Scotia government, helping to make sites like Peggy's Cove famous. McAskill was by all accounts an eccentric, hard-drinking and death-defying lover of the sea. It is not surprising to learn that he once persuaded the crew of the Bluenose to lash him to its soaked, slanting deck where, with one hand protecting his lens from the spray, he waited for the shot he wanted.
