No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. Some edge wear to jacket and boards, light toning and a soft crease to the front flap. Chad Boothroyd grows up in a small Cornwall village next door to the great estate of the Orlops, dominated by Lucy Orlop - portrait painter, unconvinced spinster, and guardian of the beautiful and mysterious Rose Garland. As Chad and three friends scatter into their various tangled adventures - one a nuclear physicist, one a power in the Labour party, the third a handsome, reckless poet who loses his legs in the First World War - Rose plays an important part in all their lives: mistress of one, briefly the wife of another, and at last married to Chad, who had loved her since he first saw her as a child in Cornwall. Told by Chad himself, who becomes a successful playwright, and peopled by the men and women of the theater, of science, and of government. A story of three generations in the tradition of the author of The Houses in Between.
